1. Eliminate all forms of refined carbohydrates coffee sodas additional sugar. Preferably by setting goals and committing to the goals that you set.
2. Eliminate animal protein and dairy products. You can choose to eliminate one at the beginning and set the goal to eliminate the next one if you choose to do it slowly.
Some individuals have done it cold turkey quite successfully ,yet others prefer taking it slowly . It depends on the goals you set.
3. Reduce the consumption of concentrated starches such as bread and potatoes, and replace with additional quantities of vegies, such as: Broccoli, green beans, asparagus, zucchini cauliflower to become more satisfied.
4. Be prepared to receive counsel to setting new goals and developing better relationship with food. My book Quintesential recipe for vibrant health will assist you in your journey of transition as well as set clear goals so that you can continue this healthful journey .
5. Don’t be so worried about getting ample amount of protein. The fact is that you get sufficient amount of quality protein from many plant based nutrition specially all the green leafy vegetables such as kale, spinach, collard and bokchoy. The suggested daily requirement of protein (the current suggestion) is far too much for human consumption to enjoy vibrant health. High consumption of proteins will make the body very acid and the acid deposit in joints and various organs may cause loss of vitality overall.
Consider a large cow for example. It eats green grass or other vegetation yet they build large muscles. This is the same with horses. They are not eating animals and flesh.
We as humans do not have the teeth of carnivorous, that is; the sharp teeth which are needed to tear animal flesh.
Moreover, Protein deficiency is not prevalent in the USA. But people actually develop diseases which are caused by excess acidity which leads to low oxygenation on the cellular level and a whole host of other health issues such as low thyroid, cardiovascular diseases, stroke and cancer.
6. be sure to consume ample amounts of green leafy vegetables. Kale, lettuce, spinach, dandelion as well as various vegetables and some nuts and seeds in moderation. If you are a fruit lover, be sure to add exercise activity to your routine to burn the energy versus being sedentary while overdoing large quantity of fruits.
7. Consume regular fermented foods such as sauerkraut or pro biotics. It will support your digestive tract as well as your immune system. Remember 80 percent of your immune system is within your gut.
8. Find support systems so you can be motivated, inspired and commit to your new lifestyle. Start or join a potluck group
9. If experiencing cravings ,acknowledge and honour your cravings. The cravings for more sweets are not a deficiency of protein. The cravings are either psychological or are due to deficiency of minerals. A good suggestion for the emotional aspect of the cravings is to replace your bad dietary habits with some kind of a favorite food that is absolutely good for you. When I feel like cravings I tend to make a special tasty and favorite healthy recipe to treat myself .
Sometimes for me all it takes some tasty tomatoes or cucumber slices . Romaine lettuce is phenomenal for satisfying those cravings. I used to indulge in more romaine lettuce. If you ate a salad and wanted more, let yourself have some more veggies.
I also loved my salad dressings years ago made with almond butter and tahini and they are still my favorite. Although I don’t need as much richness now. But in the beginning while you are in transition, give yourself that richness, and fullness of flavor. Even though they are higher in fat, they do contain some protein and carbohydrates and will be satisfying.
Remember that your cravings or over eating can be from from unhealthy food habits from the past. It is short lived and will not be for very long. The longer you abstain from animal proteins or toxic foods such as refined foods with toxic chemicals, the easier it will be for you gravitate towards craving healthier food. Sometimes having, carrots, celery sticks, apple, pear slices, or even a few soaked/sprouted nuts and seeds for snacking is helpful.
10. Do soak your nuts and seeds such as almonds walnuts, sunflower seeds, hazelnuts, pumpkin, chia, and flax seeds. This will make the enzyme inhibitors that are present in the soaked water that you will throw away, release from the food and the nuts/seeds becomes easily digestible and become high quality amino acid with full enzyme activity.
11. Try to incorporate as much sprouts in your daily routine. Many grocery stores you will find sunflower sprouts, pea shoot sprouts, and in some others you will find sprouts that are tiny sprouts from Bok choi, broccoli, arugula, and cilantro. These are packed with enzymes and amino acids. These are pure form of protein that you can consume. The more you consume of the sprouts the more satisfied you will be. You will keep filling in the nutrients that your body needs.
12. For those seeking weight loss
Assuming that you are not overeating but cannot lose weight. You might have considerable mineral deficiency. Often people believe that the vegan nutrition is wrong for them, when, in fact, it may mean that the brain is sending a message to you to bring on more quality nutrition. This deficiency needs to be handled. Consider to incorporate more algea, like spirilina or chlorella, or sea vegetables such as kelp, nori and Dulse. They will help satisfy these deficiencies and cravings. If craving persists, you may need to seek the advice of a nutrition consultant.
The above tips are basic foundation for optimal nutrition.
